"This fluorescent night will divide us and dissolve to a flickering screen."
Name: Embry Call Age/DOB: October 18th, 1990 Height: 6'3 Family: Affiliation: Quileute Werewolf Mother - Sarah Call (Embry's mother is a good, hard-working woman who loves her son and does her best for him. She is not, however, all that forthcoming with her own secrets, and she's found it difficult, coming to terms with her son's change and the reality behind the Quileute legends, which has made for a more distant relationship than either is used to. She's recently moved away, leaving Embry alone in the house.) Father - Unknown (Embry believed his father to be a member of another tribe until Leah's divisive thoughts on the topic made all of them realize otherwise. Now he's not sure who his father is, but it's likely to be one of three men - any of which would make him have at least one brother - and maybe more - that he didn't know about.)
Appearance: Like all of the werewolves, Embry is tall and muscular. To the casual observer, he is a BIG young man - but when standing beside his packmates, he is more slender than the bulkier of them, though still muscular and broad shouldered.
He is good looking, though Jacob has always been the most attractive of the three best friends. His dark hair was cut short after his first change, but lately he's let it grow back out, frequently pulling it back in a simple ponytail to keep it out of his way.
He was always a fairly dexterous boy, but the change left him with the enhanced reflexes and predatory grace that all the wolves have. He has a slightly crooked, self-effacing sort of smile, and a deep, somewhat scratchy-sounding voice.
"We all know each others' secrets, things seen, but not seen."
Personality: While he's not without his own temper - made a little sharper and shorter by the change - Embry has always been the most easy-going of his friends. He is quieter, and kind-natured. When fights break out, he has always tended to fall into a mediator role, trying to smooth things over and make everyone get along.
He doesn't think of himself as anything special, and never has. The pack has given him a sense of belonging, but not of individuality. While others chafe at the idea of their wolf-side chaining them forever to La Push, and their duties as Protectors, Embry sees it as a blessing. He'd never known what he wanted to do, not seeing any real talent in himself worth pursuing, and had been growing steadily more concerned as he got older, and the thought of the future that teachers and counselors harped on grew closer.
He has a dry sense of humor, and isn't above a bit of teasing and roughhousing. His temper doesn't show as often as others, but it is there. And while Embry is usually easy-going, once someone gets on his bad side, he tends to hold a grudge for a while.
He is a likable boy, though, and usually tries to see the best in others - even if some people make that hard.
Abilities: Like other Quileute in La Push, Embry is a werewolf. He possesses the ability to turn into a massive gray wolf whenever he chooses, contrary to popular belief that says werewolves are only wolves during the full moon. When human, he is big, strong, and graceful, and runs more than ten degrees hotter than normal humans. As long as he continues to transform into a wolf, he will not age. He is nineteen years old, but looks closer to twenty-five, as the transformation into a wolf aged his body to maturity. His senses are all enhanced, and while in wolf form, her shares a telepathic link with the rest of his pack, allowing them to communicate over long distances - and keeping them from having any real secrets. He retains all of his human intelligence as a wolf, but can't speak. And the wolf gives him the natural, canny awareness of a predator.
He's also a fairly decent mechanic, and likes fiddling with bikes or cars when he has time. And as the child of a single mother, he's fairly adept at taking care of himself - cooking, cleaning, etc, since he tried to help his mom out growing up. He tries not to mention the ability to cook much - since Emily doesn't ALWAYS cook and he doesn't want to end up the defacto chef for ten always-hungry werewolves.
Sexuality: Gay . . . Bisexual . . Asexual. (He's not sure. He's never had much interest in girls. He thinks they're pretty, but he was more comfortable with boys, which most young boys are. But as his friends started to fixate more and more on girls, he just never did, which made him wonder. And he DID notice them more than he thought he should. But he's shy and reserved anyway, so he didn't show much interest either way. And once he went wolf, and heard about imprinting - he's never heard of that happening with another guy, and he's a little afraid that it'll happen with a woman, and he won't like it. In a small town it's not something he ever particularly felt comfortable dealing with. But with the link between the wolves, he kind of figures it's not a secret - even if he tries not to think about anything like that.)
"Draw down the stars. Draw down the stars."
History: Embry's mother moved to La Push when she was pregnant with him. She's a member of the Makah tribe, and it was always assumed that Embry's father was from there as well. The running joke amongst the tribe is that he was named for a soap star, but it's something he doesn't particularly like hearing about.
The Quileute embraced Embry and his mother though, and he grew up as close friends with the rest of the young men and women his age. He was particularly close to Jacob Black and Quil Ateara, considering both boys his best friends.
His life was, by La Push standards, unremarkable. He helped his mom at home, and worked small odd jobs to help bring in money. He went to school and was a mediocre student - not getting into any real trouble, but not really pushing himself all that hard either. He liked History best, and had a good memory for dates and events and names, but he was still not at the head of his class - largely because he tended to forget homework assignments. He asked his mother about his father, but she rarely spoke of him, and Embry wasn't the sort of boy who pushed when someone he cared about didn't want to speak of something.
When he was about sixteen, a new girl moved to Forks. It wouldn't have caught his attention much, except that Jacob met her, and once he had, she became a frequent topic of conversation, to the point where Embry started to groan inwardly whenever her name came up. Some months later, Bella Swan came to La Push to visit Jake. Embry saw her for the first time then, and while she was pretty enough, he really just . . . didn't see whatever it was that captivated Jacob. But he tried not to tease Jake too badly in front of her, and left to give them time alone.
Things began to change around La Push. One of the older boys, Sam Uley, began acting oddly. And for some reason that Embry and his friends didn't understand, the elders didn't see this as strange, or threatening. Even when Sam began to gather . . . followers, they considered him a good guy. Protectors, the newly formed group of boys called themselves, but to Embry, Jake, and Quil - it looked like some sort of weird cult. They did everything Sam said, always hung around together. They even looked way bigger, to Embry, who thought maybe they were on some kind of steroids.
It wasn't long before he learned otherwise. He was visiting Jake one day when Jake's father, Billy, put a hand on his shoulder. Embry hadn't been aware of it really, but his skin was hot - really hot. And Billy's surprise showed in his face.
That night, Sam Uley and his "cult" showed up on Embry's doorstep. He didn't want anything to do with them - like Jacob and Quil, he thought there was something WRONG with them. But they wouldn't go, and they didn't give him much choice, dragging him off "camping". It felt like they were watching him, and he found out why soon enough, when he started to feel oddly, not sick, but strange. And then he changed.
The first change wasn't physically painful - but it hurt, nonetheless. Everything changed. His sense of who he was - because the stories said that you had to be directly descended from the original spirit wolf, and he had believed his father to be of the Makah, his friends - because he wasn't to speak of it to outsiders, his appearance. Everything.
Always a tall, lean boy, he grew taller. And while still lean, he put on muscle where before he'd been bordering on too skinny. As a wolf, he was massive and charcoal gray with his own light brown eyes. It was easier to lose his temper, after the change. And while the new, shared link with his Pack gave him a sense of family and belonging - it isolated and unnerved him too. Nothing was secret - even the things he hadn't really wanted to admit to himself, let alone anyone else. And he missed Jacob and Quil, both of whom looked at him as a traitor, because he cut his hair short and spent all his time with Sam.
His distaste for Sam became obedience and gratitude - Sam was the Alpha, and he was the rock who helped him learn to cope with what he was.
He didn't want to be happy when Jake changed too, because Jake hated it. But he was, a little. Because at least now Jake UNDERSTOOD. And he had his friend back. Even if Jake's addition to the pack meant that all of them spent a great deal of time longing for Bella Swan - which was especially foreign to Embry. Jake was unhappy though, and Embry and him were both sad for Quil, since it seemed he would follow soon.
Jake's unhappiness about Bella - and her involvement with the vampires - was hard for Embry to understand, but he tried to be there for his friend as best he could. And when Bella learned Jake's secret, and came to meet the pack, he tried to be reassuring, without giving anything away. It was hard to remember what secrets were his, and which were someone else's, now, so he tended to be somewhat more close-mouthed than he had been - and he was never an especially talkative boy.
When Quil did join them, his cheerfulness about the situation was . . . well a relief. It helped lighten the mood for all of them, since his sheer joy in his wolf form translated until they all felt better about theirs - though none of them were quite as bitter about it as Sam and Jake anyway.
When the vampires, who had left for a time, returned, new members of the Pack began to emerge - including Leah, Sam's former girlfriend. A female werewolf was a shock to all of them, but more worrying to Embry was the imprinting - a soulmate like link - that was happening to some of his pack brothers. Sam's imprint on Leah's cousin Emily led to Leah's bitterness - and the unrest within the Pack that it brought. Jared was happy with his imprint, and Quil seemed to deal with his well enough - even if it was strange, his link to a two year old girl. Embry - who'd never had much interest in women, and really hadn't planned on attaching himself to any - was more than a little worried about what would happen when he looked at some girl and just latched onto her - because there had never been a story of it being . . . not a girl. He tried not to worry about it though, since the whole Pack would know. It was supposed to be a rare thing, so chances were good that he never would. Or so he hoped.
Things with Jake and Bella got more and more turbulent, and Embry watched from the sidelines, trying to be a friend, but really wishing Jake would just move on. Bella was a nice girl - but she was in love with the leech. That wasn't going to change. And everyone could see that. Even if Embry could tell she cared about Jake too.
But Jake's obsession led to something unexpected - an Alliance with the Cullen vampires, to battle a group of newborns that were coming to hunt Bella. Embry had never been a violent boy, but the wolf in him loved the chance to fight. Right up until Jake got hurt. He came through okay though. And Embry . . . really wasn't that surprised when Jake left. Hurt, and sad. He would have gone with the other boy, if Jake had let him. Quil would have too. But Sam called them back, so he stayed.
When Jacob returned, things didn't calm down even a little. Bella's marriage and subsequent pregnancy caused a rift in the pack. Jacob split off, Seth and Leah following him. Embry was torn, and nearly followed to, but Sam's alpha presence kept him from going - and perhaps Embry wasn't quite bold enough to go against him. Sam kept he and Quil away from Jake as much as he could, to keep them from being tempted. In the end, it worked out - Jake imprinting on Bella's newborn made her safe from the Pack, and the Volturi came and went without any real damage done. Embry and Quil eventually joined Jacob's pack, but when Jake left for Alaska with the Cullens, they went back to Sam's with no hard feelings on either side.
The last two years, Embry has kept in touch with Jake, the two remaining friends, though these days he's a little closer to Quil, who is within reach. His mother, unhappy in La Push for reasons Embry could only guess had something to do with the rumors of his parentage, moved to Seattle, and Embry stayed behind, living alone in their small house and taking a job packing groceries at the local general store to make the rent. It's not exactly a stellar career, but finding time for school or a real job on top of spending half your life in fur - it just doesn't work very well.
